Three Ways To Keep Score In Pickleball

Learning to keep score in pickleball is not that easy, although it makes sense once you fully understand what's going on. But just knowing how to score isn't enough; you've got to keep score accurately as the game goes on. That means choosing a scoreboard system that is appropriate for the type of game you're playing, one that is easy to modify, and one that is very easy for everyone involved to see.

A Basic Flipchart

For more informal games where you want the score to be visible but you don't need anything fancy, a basic flipchart with cards that you add or move is appropriate. The scorecards come in different colors, and the numbers are very easy to see. These are usually good for when you can keep the scoreboard on a table and don't need to have the numbers visible across a huge court. These sets are not that expensive, and because they're completely manual, they're easy to repair or modify when you want to, say, use new cards with a different color.

An App

Yes, you can get scoring apps for pickleball on your phone or smartwatch. These are best for completely informal games between friends, or for when you want to try keeping score by yourself, even if someone else is operating a larger scoreboard. These apps are limited both in how visible they are (obviously) and what platforms you have available. For example, you're not going to be able to use an Android app on a non-Android phone. But that's a minor issue; you just find an app that works for your platform and learn the basics quickly.

An Electronic Scoreboard

If you need a highly visible scoreboard that can be seen by everyone, an electronic scoreboard is best. Some of these have remotes that you can use to change the score numbers, too. As with the cards, the numbers for the different teams may use different colored lights, but that varies by model.

As you learn to keep score in pickleball, play around with the different scoring systems. See if you can borrow a tabletop electronic scoreboard from a fellow player so you can see how easy it is to use, or play around with an app or two and see if those let you change the score quickly enough. When you become familiar with the different types of scoreboards, you'll find it easier to choose the appropriate one for the game you're playing.
