Types of Fishing Charters

Fish can be caught in almost any body of water, and guides will take you almost anywhere that fish can be found. If you want to go fishing with a guide, here are several types of fishing charters to consider.

Flyfishing Charter

A flyfishing charter specifically focuses on casting flies, in hopes of catching fish that come to the surface of the water.

Flyfishing charters primarily go fishing in places that you likely could access yourself. A guide is apt to help you cast off from shore or from a kayak, either of which you can do easily enough. You can expect to fish on a stream, river, or small lake where the water is relatively tranquil.

Having a guide is still beneficial, however, as they'll know the best spots to cast from. They'll also be familiar with what flies perform best in each spot and can thus give you tips that'll increase your chances of catching something.

Surf Fishing Charter

Surf fishing charters are only available in places where large waves roll onto the shoreline. The setting is almost the opposite of what flyfishing charters look for.

Again, you can easily access any place that a surf fishing guide would take you. Guides usually go to beaches and rocky shorelines that are available to the general public. You might even see someone surf fishing when swimming at a local beach, or walking out onto a pier.

If you aren't an experienced surf fishing angler, though, you'll need the help of a guide to be successful. They'll have the equipment that this type of fishing requires, which usually is larger and more sturdy than what general fishing requires. They'll also know how far to cast offshore, and what technique you need to use to reach that distance.

In-Shore Charter

An in-shore fishing charter takes a powerboat out onto the water, but stays relatively close to land. This type of charter is sometimes also called a bay charter, especially along barrier islands where there's a bay-like setting between the islands and the mainland.

You can catch a variety of fish when in-shore fishing, and you usually hold the fishing rod yourself. These charters also aren't too long, as you don't have to spend much time getting to/from the fishing spots.

Offshore Fishing Charter

An offshore fishing charter goes out into the deep sea, where you can catch the largest fish. These charters are also called deep-sea fishing charters.
