Why You Shouldn't Store Your Kayak On Your Lawn

For some people, the idea of storing their new kayak could be as simple as laying the boat on their lawn, perhaps close to the waterfront or tucked behind a shed or the garage. While there are advantages of this approach — namely, the fact that your boat will be fairly quick to grab when you wish to use it — it's not the best idea. Instead, you should think about some form of proper kayak storage. There are all sorts of different ways to store your boat, including on racks, hoists, and other devices. Here are some reasons that you shouldn't keep your kayak on the lawn.

It Would Damage The Lawn

You can be certain that storing your kayak on the lawn would cause some degree of damage to your lawn. If you were to store the boat in this manner, you'd likely position it upside down to keep rain out of it. This would mean that the bow and stern, both of which are pointed, would be against the grass. Over time, and especially when the ground softens during periods of rain, the ends of the boat would sink in and cause divots. Additionally, the grass beneath the kayak would almost certainly go yellow because of not getting enough sunlight.

It Would Make Lawn Care Difficult

If you were to keep your kayak on your lawn, you'd likely need to move it each time you cut the grass. Over the course of the summer, you might cut the grass once a week. This would mean that you'd be constantly moving the boat around and then returning it to its original spot. This process, of course, would be a hassle when you're eager to cut the grass in a timely manner, and it would likely make you rethink your decision to leave the boat on the lawn.

It Would Cause Fading

Storing your kayak on the lawn may result in it being exposed to direct sunlight for much of the day. The sunlight would almost certainly cause the color of the boat to fade, which would reduce its visual appeal. On some boats, prolonged exposure to the sun could even cause the plastic to weaken to some degree. Given these concerns, it's important to use a proper storage method for your kayak.
