Choosing A Sleepaway Summer Camp For Volleyball For Your School-Aged Child

If your child is interested in playing volleyball, there are many sleepaway summer camps that have the sport as a focus. Campers play the game throughout the day in drills, competitions, and games. However, selecting one among many can be challenging; asking these questions might help you to make a final choice.

What Level of Volleyball Is the Camp Geared Toward?

Some camps have tryouts of some kind so that they can assess your child's ability to play before they are accepted into the program. That isn't to say that beginners aren't welcome; in fact, many volleyball camps are happy to admit new players who want to get better at the sport. If your child is a beginner but has a natural knack for the game, they may advance through different levels throughout the course of the summer. You may want to ask about requirements for progressing so you can encourage your child to reach the next levels.

What Ages Are Served at the Camp?

This can be an especially important consideration when your child is exceptionally good at volleyball already. They may be ready for a camp that caters to older players, but because of their age, a particular camp might not be open to them. In that case, you may want to seek out a volleyball camp that has as many different levels and age groups as possible so that, if you've got a really good player, they can take coaching sessions with older kids but bunk with children their age.

Will Coaches Be Bunking with Campers?

Different volleyball camps offer different kinds of leaders throughout the camp. In some camps, the same people who coach the campers in volleyball will be the counselors that sleep with the kids and do other activities with them. In other camps, the volleyball coaches are only there during the day to do volleyball drills and techniques with the kids; "regular" counselors take over after that point. One way isn't necessarily better than the other, but you might prefer having your child with the same people throughout the day so that they have greater opportunities to bond.

What Kind of Non-Volleyball Activities Are Offered?

Your child might love the game of volleyball, but since they'll be spending time at the camp during their summer vacation, you likely hope that they'll spend some time swimming, making campfires, and doing other traditional sleepaway camp activities. Ask about the variety of activities that are offered in addition to volleyball so you can talk with your child about whether those things sound like fun to them.

When you're able to consider all these different factors, you are sure to choose a sleepaway volleyball camp that your child will enjoy. Talking to other parents and asking questions of staff at different camps will help you to feel confident about your ultimate choice.
