2 Items To Bring On Bike Tours — Other Than Biking Gear

When going on a multi-day bike tour, you either need to borrow or bring a bike, helmet, and appropriate clothing for biking. These aren't all the items you'll want to have with you, though. If you're getting ready for a bike tour, here are two other things to pack in your suitcase.

A Camera That Affixes to Your Helmet

Most bike tours follow picturesque roots, and you'll likely want to take pictures along the way. Stopping to get a camera out, however, takes time. It also forces you to come to a stop — something you may not want to do when going uphill. If you need to take a break every time you take a picture, you'll probably pass on several shots and not have as many images to show people once you return home.

Instead of bringing a traditional camera, invest in one that can attach to your helmet. This way, you'll be able to take pictures without stopping. Simply point your head in the direction you want to take the picture and shoot. Depending on the model, you might have to click a button, but you can probably get an extension that makes this easy to do while you're still riding. If you don't want to have to click for a picture, you can set the camera to take continuous video, and then you can later select the frames you like best and use them as still shots.

(A handlebar-mounted camera would also let you take pictures while continuing to bike, but you wouldn't be able to take as many different shots. It can be difficult to turn handlebars without slowing or, sometimes, stopping. Mounting the camera to your helmet lets you just turn your head for the perfect shot.)

An Evening Activity

On bike tours, the evening is a time to relax and socialize. There may be special activities planned for some nights, but other nights may be low-key times for people to unwind. These hours are a great time to do an activity that you enjoy and isn't as physically demanding as biking.

If you like reading books, playing cards, or enjoying some other pastime, bring it along with you for these relaxing hours. You'll have some time to enjoy it, and you may even be able to entice fellow bikers if it's a social activity, such as a card game or board game. Even if it's a book, the book may spark a conversation with someone else.
