A Basic Guide To The Three Types Of Canoe Paddles

If you just purchased your first canoe, you need to make sure that you purchase the right type of paddle for the type of cannoning that you want to do. Here is an overview of the three types of canoe paddles that you can use with your new canoe.

#1 Recreational Paddles

If you are looking for a versatile paddle that will work on choppy lakes and smooth rivers with small rapids, this is the perfect paddle. It is a great paddle for beginners to purchase as it is versatile and works with different bodies of water.

These types of paddles are generally made out of materials such as wood, plastic, and aluminum. The blades on the paddle and the length of the paddle are about mid-sized when compared to other canoe paddles.

#2 Whitewater Paddle

If you are planning on spending most of your time in the canoe out on a river that is full of rapids, you are going to want to invest in a whitewater paddle. These paddles are made so that you are able to cut through the water and quickly push yourself through the rapids. This is why whitewater paddles have shorter blades than recreational paddles: they are designed to help you move through the water at a faster rate.

When paddling through rapids, you may need to push yourself off a rock if you get stuck. You may also need to push your boat off the bottom of the river if it gets stuck. Whitewater paddles are designed specifically for those types of situations, which is why they have a strong, straight tip, so they can be used to push off of things.

Whitewater paddles are really strong so they can withstand the pressure from strong currents and bumping against rocks. They are made out of materials like fiberglass, carbon, and wood.

#3 Lake Water Paddle

If you primarily intend to use your canoe on lakes, you want to use a paddle that is designed to cut through smooth water with broad, fluid strokes. Lake water paddles have longer blades than either recreational paddles or whitewater paddles so that you are able to cut through the deep water in a lake and propel yourself forward. Lake water paddles are usually made out of wood and tend to be pretty sturdy.

Think about where you plan on using your canoe before you purchase your paddle. If you know that you will be primarily spending your time in a lake, go with a lake water paddle, and if you know you want to spend most of your time out in a river, purchase a whitewater paddle. If you are unsure how you will use your canoe, your best bet is to go with a recreational paddle for now.
