2 Of The Best Beaches For Surfing In The Northeast

Most people think of California or Hawaii when someone mentions surfing, but there are actually lots of other spots in the USA to find killer waves. If you don't want to fly all the way to Hawaii, and are not planning on taking a trip to California, then you can still catch some great sets around the country. This is a list of 2 of the best beach surf sports in the northeast.

Montauk, Long Island

Montauk is located at the extreme end of Long Island. It doesn't have the overcrowded feel that you get when you go to Jones Beach, and its not as exclusive as The Hamptons. It has a no frills, laid back feel. The area is not as popular with sunbathers and swimmers as some of the large beaches heading west (Jones Beach, Coopers Beach, and Sagg Beach.) That's a great thing for surfers because you won't have to worry about too many swimmers in your path. That said, there are swimmers, and if you're surfing a beach break (where the waves break onto a beach, as opposed to a point or shore break) then you will have to be on the lookout. Beginners should surf the beach breaks, so what you should do is speak with lifeguards on duty and have ask them where on the beach would be the best spot so as to avoid swimmers. A popular beach break is Ditch Plains. There are lifeguards on duty, restrooms, changing rooms, and showers.

Montauk is also a great town at night. It's got lots of restaurants and bars that cater to the summer crowds. The bars and restaurants are not super exclusive like you'll find in many parts of The Hampton's, so you won't have to wait behind a velvet rope to get a drink.

Ocean City, New Jersey

Ocean City is a classic Jersey Shore type experience. There is a boardwalk, Ferris wheel, carnival games, and amusement rides. There is also an awesome beach and great waves. It's located on a peninsula, south of Atlantic City and located right off of the Garden State Parkway. The beach has both lifeguarded sections and unguarded areas. The rules are that you can only surf three spots when the lifeguards are on duty, all other areas you have to wait until the lifeguards are off duty. The waves break really smoothly on the beach because it's level and there is a long, smooth shoreline.

Now all you need is to pick a northern beach and find the nearest beach rental company (like West End Water Sports).
